On Friday, November 21, Lincoln was honored to have classical violinist Gareth Johnson play for them on his 1840 violin. During his 45-minute performance, sponsored by the Dubuque Arts Council, Gareth started with the national anthem followed by Johann Sebastian Bach and finished with a hip-hop piece of his own. He educated students about the history of the violin and various composers and fielded questions from Lincoln students. Johnson fell in love with the violin at the age of 10 and continues to practice six to ten hours a day. He has performed all over the world as a soloist with various symphonies, including the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra during his two-week stay in Dubuque. His passion for the violin is obvious. "It becomes part of you, like breathing. Music is almost like a part of our vocabulary."
